Teen Sensation Alexei Popyrin Exists At Third Round Australian Open

Alexei Popyrin may have exited the Australian Open but that didn’t stop the teen sensation from bowing out with a “No Retreat, No Surrender” mindset. His fightback spirit will definitely act as a catalysts to spur on not just Aussies, but fans across the globe in any ‘impossible’ situation.

After Popyrin’s Australian Open third round match with Frenchman Lucas Pouille, he has shown he is no one-hit wonder. Following the exit of Alex Bolt, the 19-year-old became the last local male in the singles until he bowed out at Melbourne Park.

He sent fans into a frenzy at the Margaret Court Arena on Saturday night when he trailed by two sets and 0-4 in the third set tie-break, only to save a match point and then pushed the clash to five sets. He eventually fell just short 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 6-7 (12-10) 4-6 6-3 with the match lasting almost four hours and finishing after midnight.

Even though this was Popyrin’s first time playing five sets in a tournament, the teen showed why he is ready to play at the highest level of the game. This follows his dismissal of world No. 8 Dominic Thiem for a place in the last 32.

While expressing disappointment at not winning, Popyrin is excited by his performance in just his second major. He said:

“Unfortunately I couldn’t get it done and that’s going to sting a little bit.”

“I didn’t win the match but I’m happy with the way the week has gone and happy with the way I played. I didn’t surprise myself — I felt pretty comfortable out there.”

The teen star who put up an incredible display against the 28th seed, ranked world No. 149, hit 63 winners while Pouille also nailed 64.

Overall, Alexei Popyrin and fellow teen Alex de Minaur, marked themselves as future Aussie stars after their Australian Open campaign.
