Footballer Star Cristiano Ronaldo Fined $28 Million After Pleading Guilty To Tax Fraud
Cristiano Ronaldo, 33, has avoided serving time in prison though fined $28 million after the Juventus forward pleaded guilty to tax fraud. He also accepted a two-year suspended jail sentence as part of a deal.
Thie deal includes a 23-month prison sentence but under Spanish law, a first-time offender does not usually do time for sentences under two years. Cristiano will not be jailed but is expected to serve his sentence under probation.
Also, while playing for Real Madrid, Ronaldo was accused of hiding income generated in Spain between 2010 and 2014. The case revolved around deals involving the soccer star’s image rights.
The agreement had been settled in advance so the court appearance lasted under 15 minutes. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner only had to sign off on the deal after which he left accompanied by Georgina.
Prosecutors pointed out that Cristiano knowingly hid his earnings by using low-tax companies in foreign nations to avoid paying the required tax in Spain.
Cristiano Ronaldo was pictured leaving the courtroom all smiles and even signed autographs for fans. His gorgeous model girlfriend, Georgina Rodriguez, was seen in the Madrid court on Tuesday supporting the Portuguese footballer.
Spanish news agency EFE, state Ronaldo acknowledged four incidents, totalling €5.7 million. The footballer’s lawyers had originally argued it was a misunderstanding and not a deliberate attempt to evade tax.
Eventually, a deal was reached in June 2018.
