Residents of Ikorodu, Lagos State, took the law into their hands as they dished out jungle justice on suspected members of the dreaded ritual cult, Badoo. It’s understood vigilante members killed and burnt three Badoo suspects at Odogunyan area. Meanwhile, this follows reports in which the police claimed over 100 persons suspected to be members of the cult, had been arrested during raids on Bayeku, Ipakodo, Ibeshe and Odongunyan, among other communities in Ikorodu.
According to Punch Metro, residents who had been keeping vigils in securing themselves and their families, flagged down a Honda-Compact Recreational Vehicle with three occupants at about 2am on Sunday on Oduyebo Street, near Odogunyan bus stop. They discovered a big stone and some quantities of diesel with charms in the vehicle which are some of the instruments of destruction used by Badoo gang.
The vigilantes are reported to have asked them where they were going and the purpose of the objects found in the vehicle especially the stone which members of the notorious gang use to smash the heads of their victims. However, when the suspects failed to give a convincing answer, the vigilante members started beating them up and and eventually set them and the CRV ablaze.
According to a resident, Olakunle Wahab,, the suspects confessed to being members of Badoo before they were lynched. He said:
“The three persons were in a CRV without a number plate. They were stopped and asked where they were going to, but they could not give a satisfactory answer. A big stone was found in the vehicle. As they were being beaten up, they demanded to be handed over to the police.
“But the vigilantes claimed that they would be freed if they were handed over to the police. In fact, the mob chased away a police patrol team that came to rescue the suspects.”
Punch Metro also disclosed that a member of Onyabo, a local vigilance group in the community, Morufu Ojoge, revealed that the suspects claimed they were going to tow a vehicle, which broke down somewhere. He added:
“They were asked to call somebody they knew on the telephone, but they could not do so. When their vehicle was searched, a big stone and some other objects were found there. They had been lynched before my colleagues and I got to the scene.”
A Facebook user, Eniola Jackson, posted on a forum, Ikorodu Ambassadors, on Sunday, saying the gang had wanted to strike at Ojogbe, Ikorodu, but the attack was foiled by the barks of a dog.
He wrote, “The people of Ojogbe (Beach Road), Ikorodu cannot sleep. Youths, women, and the entire people of Ojogbe are outside their house currently; they can’t sleep. They are outside their rooms securing their lives with weapons.
“They are having sleepless nights just because of this notorious killer-cult, Badoo. Information got to us that Badoo gang visited the community, but was unable to successfully execute their task. Baba Obina’s dog did not allow them. The dog barked so much that everyone in the community rushed out with weapons.
“Before the notorious killers ran away, they hit the dog with their weapons and this morning (Sunday), the dog died.”
