Latest News USA: Wisconsin Mother Charged With Child Neglect After Son, 16, With Disabilities Left Severely Malnourished At Time Of His Death Weighing 42 Pounds
A 32-year-old Wisconsin woman identified as Iraida Pizarro-Osorio, has been arrested following the death of her 16-year-old son, who had disabilities and was severely malnourished at the time of his death, weighing just 42 lbs.
According to reports, Pizarro-Osorio is being held on $35,000 bail after being charged with child neglect resulting in great bodily harm. Even though medical examiners have not yet released the official cause of Hector Pizarro’s death, an autopsy did reveal the teen was severely malnourished. There were also bedsores on his body, according to officials.
The Associated Press obtained a criminal complaint which reveals that Pizarro-Osorio took her son to the clinic after he became unresponsive. He was described as appearing to be extremely emaciated to the point that his skeletal structure was visible underneath his skin. The mother also told the cops that her son had a chromosome disorder, was epileptic and autistic, conditions that impacted his ability to gain weight. She said he also had the mental capacity of a small child and never weighed more than 75 to 80 pounds.
According to Pizarro-Osorio, she gave her son “normal” food, a liquid supplement, milk and other liquids, but two weeks ago his appetite began to diminish, the charging document reveals.
Pizarro-Osorio, who has two other children, allegedly told police she brought Hector to see a doctor during a recent trip to Puerto Rico, but that he was not treated because she doesn’t have insurance. However, she later allegedly confessed she hadn’t been to Puerto Rico but misled investigators because she was afraid child protective services would remove the children from her custody.
Police interviewed an additional 18-year-old woman who told them that Pizarro-Osorio locked her teenage son in his bedroom at night, FOX6 reported. Pizarro-Osorio “claimed the lock was to ensure that [the teen] did not leave his bedroom at night” and that she “would feed [him] dinner and then lock [him] in his bedroom at bedtime.” She said after she knew he was asleep, she would unlock the door.
The woman is due back in court on Sept. 18.
